FAQ

Why “Local”?

We believe that, as limited human beings, we live best and most wisely when we learn to care for that which is near us and of which we are a part.

What is the age range?

The age-range of The Local Academy depends upon the needs of the community but, for now, includes students in the general age range of 10-18. The Local Academy is built around providing an opportunity for strong, peer friendships and community, as well as for friendships and community between older and younger students.

What is the weekly schedule?

The Farm Day occurs on a single day of the week, while Dialogues take place on whichever day is conducive to each family.

How much time is required per week and year for students?

The program runs for a full school-calendar year, August to May, one full, “Farm Day” a week and an additional hour (Dialogues) on another day. At-home time depends almost entirely on students and their families, in conversation with the Guide.

Can The Local Academy fit within our family’s educational needs?

Families may use any part of the Local Academy’s rhythm to fit their own structure and needs, though this is left up to each family. Our community of parents also seeks to help one another accomplish this task.

What is the tuition? And are there scholarships?

Tuition is $4,000/ year (August-May). Scholarships may be available for those in need or for those who have multiple students in the program.

Where does each part of the program take place?

The Farm Day is on a local farm/homestead, and supervisions usually take place at a local coffee shop.
